The Toronto Blue Jays acquired Cy Young Award winning pitcher Shane Bieber through a trade with the Cleveland Guardians, the teams announced Thursday.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Guardians have traded former Cy Young winner Shane Bieber to the Blue Jays. Bieber, who won the Cy Young in 2020, has been recovering from Tommy John surgery since April of 2024. He made a rehab start for Class AA Akron on Tuesday in which he threw four innings.

Acquiring Shane Bieber ahead of the trade deadline adds a potential playoff starter to the Jays’ rotation — a guy with a Cy Young on his mantle, an ERA title in his bag and three career postseason outings under his belt. However, that upside comes with risk.
