BMW has paused a £600mn investment plan to produce electric Mini cars in Oxford, putting the future of the historic plant under threat as the industry grapples with a slower than expected move away from petrol vehicles.

BMW said on Saturday it is rethinking its timetable for manufacturing all-electric Mini cars in Britain, citing uncertainties facing the industry.

BMW has delayed a £600 million electric car investment due to "uncertainties" in the automotive industry. The manufacturer said it will review the reintroduction of electric vehicles at its Mini plant in Cowley, Oxford, and will not accept a related £60m grant from government, but confirmed they remained in "close dialogue".
