West Virginia is under a state of emergency after deadly flash flooding overwhelmed communities over the weekend, leaving cars submerged, homes destroyed and causing some roads to buckle. The governor says at least five people are dead and four others are missing.

Flash flooding caused by torrential rains on Saturday killed at least three people in northern West Virginia. Officials said 2.5 to 4 inches of rain fell within about half an hour.

Up to four inches of rain fell in a 30-minute period in Ohio County on Saturday night. More rain was falling on Sunday, damaging homes and flooding roads.
