UFCW Local 5, which represents about 25,000 Safeway employees in the Bay Area and Northern California, said that if an agreement isn’t reached by midnight Friday, grocery store workers will walk off the job.

Despite active negotiations for better pay, Safeways in California are advertising temporary positions with higher wages than they’re currently paying union members.

The union said it is pushing for higher wages, funding for health care and pension benefits and scheduling provisions.
