New York Governor Kathy Hochul delivered a forceful rebuke this week of the latest redistricting efforts in Texas, denouncing them as a racially discriminatory power grab orchestrated by Republicans — and warning that Democrats across the country must not allow history to repeat itself.

The political skirmish over redistricting comes as the administration of President Donald J. Trump seeks to flip five Democrat congressional seats in Texas

Unlike most states, New York delegated redistricting powers to a 10-member bipartisan commission in 2014, under then-Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo. The commission draws up maps that can be approved or rejected by the State Legislature. The process was approved by New York voters in a statewide referendum.
