Rose died in September 2024 at the age of 83, and attorney Jeffrey Lenkov filed a petition to remove Rose's permanent ban. In a letter to Lenkov, Manfred said the permanently ineligible list no longer applies to deceased former players.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred reinstated deceased players Pete Rose and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson from he permanently ineligible list, paving the way for them to be possibly inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Jackson was among the eight so-called "Chicago Black Sox" banned for throwing the 1919 World Series. Rose agreed to a ban in 1989 after an investigation concluded he repeatedly bet on the Cincinnati Reds as a player and manager.
