More than 4 million people are in the firing line of Tropical Cyclone Alfred as it tracks towards the south-east Queensland and northern NSW coast. About 20,000 homes in Brisbane alone are at risk of storm surge and flooding impacts associated with the system.

Northern New South Wales residents are bracing for impact with fears Tropical Cyclone Alfred could smash the coast as a category 3 system as schools shut their doors and residents batten down the hatches.

Significant damage and power outages are possible in the densely populated region of Queensland, where tropical cyclones impacts are not uncommon, but direct landfalls are.

Damaging winds, heavy rainfall and life-threatening floods are expected after the storm made a sudden shift toward Queensland.

Tropical Cyclone Alfred is likely to hit north of Brisbane. As of March 4, 2025, the cyclone was sitting at a category 2 whilst offshore near the Sunshine Coast.

Category two storm dubbed Cyclone Alfred has made its way towards the coast of Queensland. The cyclone has increased in speed, approaching the coastline at a rate of just over 10 kilometres per hour overnight.

As tropical Cyclone Alfred is expected to make landfall in Queensland later this week, councils in the state’s southeast have begun to reduce services including ferries and kerbside collection. The cyclone is currently approximately 560 kilometres off the east coast of the state,
