Madre Fire initially started 1:07 p.m. July 2 in San Luis Obispo County, California. Since its discovery six days ago, it has burned 80,603 acres. A crew of 1,573 firefighters effectively contained 35% of the fire by Tuesday morning. The cause of it remains under investigation.

The Madre Fire’s growth in eastern San Luis Obispo County slowed to a crawl as the holiday weekend came to an end.

The Madre fire has grown to 70,800 acres in San Luis Obispo County, making it the largest blaze in the state this year.
