A salmonella egg recall and falling prices highlight a deeper truth: trust in the food system is slower to recover than the CPI suggests.

The news came late Friday, as officials say the eggs—which were sold at Walmart and other retailers—are part of an outbreak investigation.

The recalled eggs will have a plant code number (P-6562 or CA5330) printed on the carton or package, along with Julian Dates between 32 and 126. As for packaging, the recalled retail eggs were sold in fiber or plastic cartons, with the above codes printed on one side of the carton.

A salmonella outbreak has caused the recall of 1.7 million dozen eggs and has sickened 79 people in seven states. So far, Idaho is not among states with reports of sick consumers, though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration continues to track the outbreak.
