Vanderbilt baseball's top signee will almost certainly not make it to campus as right-handed pitcher Seth Hernandez was selected sixth overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft on July 13. Hernandez was widely believed to be going pro rather than joining the Commodores throughout his senior season of high school.

Seth Hernandez has imagined his name being announced for years at the MLB amateur draft. It finally happened Sunday. The Gatorade national player of the year and two-time L.A. Times player of the year from Corona High School was chosen No. 6 overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Projected to be a top MLB Draft pick for the last two years, Hernandez’ name was called Wednesday night at the 2025 MLB Draft in Atlanta when he was selected No. 6 overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hernandez will join fellow Californians Paul Skenes (El Toro High) and Jared Jones (La Mirada High).
